Hard to believe that September is here, kids are back in school and summer is coming to a close for another season. Speaking of seasons, what season is your business in?

It's hard to believe that September is here, kids are back in school and summer is coming to a close for another season.

Speaking of seasons, what season is your business in? Are you basking in the warmth of summer or struggling to find enough wood to keep the fires burning? Every body and every thing goes through seasons – what matters is what we do during those seasons.

For instance, I had a conversation with a client recently in which he lamented that he has possibly waited too long to embrace the changes happening in his industry. He isn’t a newbie at business so it was a tough admission for him to make and frankly, he is struggling with what to do. His competition has “kept up” with change and is basking in success. He struggles to cover expenses every day.

Not to be trite but change is inevitable. It is what you do with that change that matters.

In economics, the most significant change that has happened in our lifetime is the advent of the Internet. What started as a mechanism of communication now impacts nearly everything we do. You don’t have to look far (perhaps no further than your own hand) to recognize that technology that relies on the Internet is a constant companion.

If you are a hold-out, believing you can operate in a vacuum, you might as well be standing in the arctic in your bathing suit. The fact is, you won’t survive.

So how do you effectively embrace the ever changing Internet? You start with an effective website. It’s the foundation for everything else you might do. From there, you have to branch out and actually engage your prospect. It’s really no different than talking with the person who has walked through your door or has called you. Yes, the mechanism of how they got to you has changed but it’s still the same process – they want/need something you have to offer and now you have to demonstrate why they should buy from you versus your competition.

Frankly, if you are not confident in what you’re doing online, you need to embrace that reality and do something about it. The Internet is not going away, it isn’t slowing down and it isn’t getting smaller. Embrace this season of change or find something else to do.

If you want to learn how you can embrace the Internet, we would welcome the opportunity to talk with you.
